Kalen Hogan debuted onto the local Central Coast music scene in late 2022. At age 17, Kalen proudly launched his debut album ‘Isolation’ in May 2023. Keen to kick off the new year with new singles, Kalen successfully released ‘ON THE PHONE’ and ‘RIGHT THERE’ in the first 6 months of 2024. Kalen releases ‘MINDLESS’ as his final single for the year, which drops across the major streaming platforms November 1st, 2024.
As a songwriter who isn't afraid to tackle all topics in his lyrics, Kalen says ‘Mindless’ is a song about mental illness. It describes hallucinogenic episodes and schizophrenic like feelings. We are taken on a journey with a person who is well into literally losing their mind. As an alternate indie rock singer song writer, Kalen proudly admits to being inspired by the 1990’s grunge movement, with a real reverence for bands like Nirvana and Alice in Chains. Kalen sings about the complexities of everyday life, with an open heart and keen observing eye. His pure vocal tone has been described as sounding reminiscent of Thom Yorke from Radiohead and the late Jeff Buckley.

Mindless’ is a song about mental illness. Kalen sings ‘Mindless’ through the eyes of a person who is drowning and isolated due to an altered state of mind. Kalen is moved by the gritty side life and respects those who are struggling with inherited or self-induced negative states of mind. It describes hallucinogenic episodes and schizophrenic-like symptoms. We are taken on a journey with a person who is well into literally losing their mind. The exhaustion felt after these episodes leave people drained and disconnected, which has been described as mindless state of being.

Right There’ is a song about not knowing what you’ve got, until it’s almost ending or gone. It sings of how we don’t focus on the passing of time in life and almost take for granted that the people and surroundings will always remain the same around you.
The vocals build up to a final bridge that declares time is stolen and quickly turned into a memory. There is a strong desire to return to a moment that you know is over. The guitar conveys the wistful yearning through its cord progression, crunch, and echo. The musical composition and lyric abruptly finishes on the last word, amplifying the ‘end’.

1st single release for 2024 ON THE PHONE

‘On the Phone’ sings of the challenge of being stuck in today’s dating apps, offline from life. This song narrates the tale of a mate watching two separate friends lost on their phones, scrolling to date strangers, whilst he knows they would be perfectly matched, if they just got out of their phones and rooms.
The chords and melody for the track had been bouncing around in Kalen’s mind whilst he finished off the ‘Isolation’ album in 2023 but the story behind the lyrics had yet to unfold. Kalen believes ‘On the Phone’ has a bit of an attitude and would never have fitted in with his melancholier sounding tracks of the previous year.

Recorded at Damien Gerard Studio's with producer Andrew Beck and with Kayne Butler on drums, the album highlights this young musician’s natural talent for creating catchy melodies. Although, still in his last year at school the album has a ageless appeal. The thoughtful and sometimes melancholy lyrics highlight
Kalen’s sensitivity to life's universa themes.
From the initial single born from the pandemic lockdowns, the songs transition through: relationships left behind; feeling alienated or lost; realising the finite time you have with those you love and understanding your outlook is only relevant to your perspective.
The album ‘Isolation’ was initially created in a time of forced introspective thinking. Skilfully, the tracks are matched with some soul-searching guitar solos that echo the intensity of the lyrics. Tracks like 'Beliefs' and 'Not Even A Friend' are tracks that fight back with some big drums and up beat spicy guitar chords.
The dissonant harmonies and chord progression on the album are a subtle nod to Kalen's respect for the 1990's Seattle Grunge scene. The album is alternative rock and with the purposeful lack of heavy distortion, the sound stays true to its indie roots.

STONED AND COLD - Out NOW
Kalen's third single released February 17, 2023.
After watching a local missing person report, Kalen felt the need to write ‘Stoned And Cold’. The missing person was someone his own age and the day was miserable outside. Kalen felt a connection to how the teens family and friends thoughts would go to the worst-case scenario. The tracks sound is filled with pensive sadness and regret. Unusually, the song ends with a final verse, rather than a chorus, leaving the listener hanging just like the imagined family. Stoned and Cold is the third preview single release off Kalen's awaited debut album 'Isolation' due out May 5 2023.

Kalen's second and last single release for the year 'Not Even a Friend' - Released October 14, 2022.
Kalen was inspired to write ‘Not Even A Friend’ after witnessing a good mates relationship blow-up! It’s about the slow decline to an eventual relationship break up and the transgressions that unravelled until it’s final downfall. It’s about the shock of thinking you know someone but finding out you don’t know them at all. Being once so close and intimate to not even a friend anymore. It’s an upbeat tempo with a fiery bridge and unravelling lyric. The track ‘Not Even A Friend’ captures the surprise and disappointment of being caught in a relationship gone south.

Help Me I’m Dying - Debut Single Release
Kalen Hogan was 15, when first inspired to write his song, Help Me I’m Dying. At the time, he was impacted by a story he’d watched of a young person dying in the arms of their parents. Kalen wrote the song to better understand how it made him feel and decided to add the imagined soul’s transition, to remind us, we aren’t just the physical form. It’s a song about wanting to be saved but equally wanting to leave a pained broken body. The track has a dream like quality, filled with melancholy, which sings of a knowing that not all can be saved. Cheers to Engineer/Production Andrew Beck @ Damien Gerard Studios, West Gosford.
